Conceptual metaphors in a life like a path-seeker by Phan Van Truong

Abstract

The article examines, analyzes, describes, and interprets the system of conceptual metaphors in the excerpt A life like a path seeker by Phan Van Truong, a text rich in philosophical reflections and humanistic orientations that has been incorporated into the Grade 10 Literature curriculum. Drawing on the theoretical framework of conceptual metaphor in Cognitive Linguistics, the study identifies three fundamental conceptual metaphors in the work: LIFE IS A SELF-CREATED JOURNEY, THE MEANS OF SUCCESS IS GIVING and HAPPINESS IS COMPASSIONATE ACCEPTANCE. Among these, the first metaphor holds a central position, illustrating how Phan Van Truong conceptualizes the life journey of each individual and emphasizing the resilience and perseverance required to create one’s own path. The other two metaphors reveal his views on the value of kindness, generosity, and compassion as essential foundations for achieving success and happiness. Collectively, this system of conceptual metaphors not only reflects the author’s embodied experiences but also provides orientational guidance for readers, encouraging them to cultivate a positive worldview, confidence, and a strong sense of responsibility in shaping their personal development.
